Halloween Healthy Treats: A Ghoulish Feast

Halloween Healthy Treats….Boo! Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to spookify your snacks without scaring away your health-conscious habits. As a dedicated dietitian and the founder of 121 Dietitian, I’m here to share some devilishly delightful and nutritious Halloween treats that will have both kids and adults howling for more. Reduce reaching for those toxic sugary sweets and hello to a spooktacular array of wholesome and delicious goodies that are easy to prepare and frightfully fun to eat. Let’s dive into the cauldron of creativity and cook up a Halloween feast that will leave your taste buds spellbound! 1. Bobbing for Apples: A Classic Halloween Tradition with a Healthy Twist A great favourite with us kids of the 70’s! Bobbing for apples. This is a timeless Halloween game that can be turned into a healthy treat. Instead of sugary treats, my mum would fill a tub with water and add fresh, crisp apples. I did the same for my kids and no doubt they will hopefully continue the tradition! Apples are packed with fibre and essential vitamins, making them perfect for a Halloween healthy game. Encourage the kids to enjoy the natural sweetness of the apples while having a ghostly good time bobbing for these fruity delights. 2. Celery Ants on a Log: A Creepy-Crawly Snack to Delight Your Guests Create a spooky sensation with celery ants on a log. Slice celery sticks into manageable pieces and fill the groove with either cream cheese, natural peanut butter or almond butter. Top it off with raisins, resembling ants crawling on a log. Celery provides a satisfying crunch, while nut butter adds healthy fats and protein, making this snack both eerie and nutritious. 3. Haunted Veggie Platter: A Garden of Goodness for halloween healthy treats Transform ordinary veggies into a haunted veggie platter. Use cookie cutters to create ghost and bat shapes from slices of cucumber, bell peppers, and carrots. Arrange them alongside cherry tomato eyeballs and dip them in hummus or Greek yogurt-based dip (easy to whizz up yourself in one of my favourite kitchen gadgets – Magimix 5200XL). Not only is this platter visually captivating, but it also offers a variety of vitamins and minerals. 4. Fruit Kebabs: A Colourful and Wholesome Delight Thread chunks of vibrant fruits such as strawberries, kiwis, and oranges onto skewers to create vibrant fruit kebabs. For an extra special touch, use a small cookie cutter to shape melon pieces into stars or moons. These kebabs are not only visually appealing but also a great source of antioxidants and natural sugars, providing a healthier alternative to sugary sweets. 5. Creepy Crudité Cups: Individual Veggie Delights Serve individual crudité cups filled with an assortment of fresh vegetables like cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, and cucumber slices. Pair them with a tasty yogurt-based dip for a ghoulishly good snack. These portioned treats are perfect for Halloween parties and ensure that everyone gets their share of nutritious nibbles. 6. Hangman Apple for halloweeen healthy treats Need to burn up any more kcals??? If so then this one is a real work out for the family! Apples being the season fruit is the fruit most commonly used but you could do this with carrots, tomatoes or even bananas! Get your choosen victim (fruit or veg!) and tie it up, hang from a pin or nail from the middle of a door way. Only using your “fangs” to take turns in making that fatal bite! The first person to take a bite wins! 7. Don’t forget the proteins! Ok Ok I’ll stop now!!! Conclusion This Halloween, why not celebrate the spooky season with creativity and a dash of nutritional goodness. By incorporating these healthy and fun treats into your festivities, you can enjoy the holiday without compromising your health goals. Remember, it’s not about avoiding treats altogether but choosing smarter options that are both delightful and nutritious. Essential kitchen utensils for stress-free cooking

Whether your aim is to get healthy by ditching the processed meals in favour of home cooked goodness. Or you simply want to get more adventurous in the kitchen. The best place to start is with the right essential kitchen utensils. It has been said that ‘a poor workman blames his tools’. So the easiest way to ensure your cooking process is as a stress-free and fast as possible is to ensure you are armed with the correct utensils. Here, we share our essential kitchen utensils that Gillian Killiner has personally used for several years and can promise will help ensure your cooking experience is a breeze. The aim to help get you healthier in the process! Measure it out Most recipes will include measurements for ingredients either in grams and ounces or millilitres and pints, not to mention tablespoons, teaspoon and dessertspoons, So a good place to start is with all the right measuring tools. I find the following set mega helpful with measuring oils, coffee, stock powder. Owning a set of weighing scales is a great start but for easy reading and accurate reading of wet and dry ingredients. Our favourite choice would be hassle-free electronic scales. You can add ingredients to the bowl, zero the scale and add again – super handy. You’ll also need a measuring jug or jugs. Choose with both the metric and imperial markings. measuring spoons are highly practical especially when using recipes from around the world. Essential kitchen utensils to chop With fresh cooking comes prep. This involves chopping so you’ll need good surfaces to chop food on, while keeping your kitchen surfaces scratch free. Chopping boards are necessary for this. Ideally, you should have separate boards to avoid cross-contamination between raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. Thankfully, chopping boards range in price many are relatively cheap but if you invest in a good set they will last years. Graters & drainers A cheese grater isn’t just for grating cheese! It comes in so handy in the kitchen and can be used for grating things like garlic, ginger, fruit, vegetables, cheeses and even chocolate! You’ll also need a really good, sturdy colander, which can be used for draining foods such as wholemeal rice and pasta. as well as rinsing vegetables. The essential kitchen utensils -smaller tools It can be rather daunting when starting off as cooking requires many skills such as chopping, slicing, stirring, whisking and peeling. While none of these are difficult to do, having the correct tools like sharp knives are essential for speed and achieving the end result you desire. Again, each of these are readily available in the shops or online. They range from low cost to very expensive. Start off with a few and build your collection as your experience grows. This furi knife block was a personal purchase which I have been using for the past few years. They really do assist in all preping tasks. If you want to go BIG with an essential kitchen utensil! Not everyone likes being in the kitchen for hours. Time saving gadgets are a great way to cut down some of the work. I absolutely love my magimix and it was a personal purchase for me after many years of really, really wanting one. I have had it now for 10 years and it works like a dream when making soups, sauces, cakes etc. Storage saviours Finally you’ll need somewhere to store all your home cooked goods. This will keep them fresh as long as possible. Alternatively freeze so you can enjoy your hard work again at speed. Healthy eating requires a little planning so these boxes are a great way of storing any ingredients you’ve prepared in advance. Storage boxes are available in a range of sizes and styles so again, start with a few and add to your collection if you need to, a handy option is to clean out tubs that you buy food in and use these again – no cost and very effective. I do again have a set of storage containers and personally bought many years ago after I realised the risks of plastics, especially when heated or storing fats. They have been used over and over each day by all my family and far more durable than I imagined they would be. Definitely a little investment and making time to cook is the cornerstone to healthy eating. As experts in Diet and Nutrition for decades we know that pouring your money into quick fixes are not the answer – you need enjoyable nutrient rich meals and snacks lifelong. Our nutritional programmes are designed to help you. On-the-go While it isn’t an essential kitchen utensil, this is definitely one thing we’d recommend… A glass drinking bottle. These are great for helping you drink more water on-the-go. They are also useful for things like shakes, smoothies and even tea. We’d be lost without ours! The reason for using glass? Glass eliminates the leaching of chemicals you get from plastic bottles. Thus reducing health concerns and also ensures the water tastes great. Reusable glass bottles assists the environment and saves you a ton of money too. We would love to hear your top utensil choices and why. Visit our facebook page to share your thoughts and ideas. Metabolic syndrome – are you at risk?
Metabolic syndrome – It’s estimated that 25% of the world’s population has “Syndrome X.” Sounds like a spy code and sadly it can be as deadly if not dealt with. Syndrome X is the underlying factor for a whole host of common health problems we treat every day at our clinic. In a nutshell, Metabolic syndrome “Syndrome X” is a cluster of simple abnormalities leading to hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and glucose intolerance followed by reduced insulin sensitivity, further leading to hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, and T2 Diabetes. What’s going on in Metabolic Syndrome? Insulin resistance is a condition where your body produces insulin but doesn’t use it properly. Insulin (a hormone secreted by the pancreas) helps your body use glucose for energy. When you’re healthy, your digestive system breaks your food down into glucose. This is absorbed into the bloodstream and travels throughout your body. As your blood glucose level rises after eating, the pancreas releases insulin to help your cells take in and use the glucose. This is a normal process and all settles pretty quickly until the next time. But when someone is insulin resistant, the cells in their muscle, fat, and liver don’t respond like they should to insulin. They “lock the door” and won’t let the glucose in. As a result, their body needs MORE insulin to help glucose enter their cells. This increases stress on the pancreas which is trying to keep up with this increased demand for insulin, but eventually the pancreas fails. The excess glucose then builds up in your bloodstream, and you are on route to Type II diabetes. The hidden dangers of Syndrome X (insulin resistance) People with metabolic syndrome are at a greater risk for developing these medical problems as well: * High blood pressure * Elevated triglycerides * Coronary artery disease * Heart attack * Obesity How Metabolic Syndrome happens Insulin resistance is largely due to eating a daily diet of refined carbohydrates (sugars, white flour, white rice, pasta, bread, cake, biscuits and all products made with them. There are thousands of them you would never realise). This over time takes its toll on your body. Also important and needs more research is the role of genetics as well as a deficiency in Omega-3 essential fatty acids. We now know about eating too many refined carbohydrates, but do you know about Omega -3? Omega-3 Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are found at every level of your body. They’re a major part of your cell membranes where they help control cell signalling, immune responses, inflammation and other metabolic functions. Including the production and release of insulin. EPA and DHA are important building blocks of nearly every organ and organ system and play a crucial role in your health. Your body depends on having the appropriate balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids. Having an imbalance leads to inflammation, sickness and disease. An estimated 6 out of 10 in western societies have far too much Omega-6. They are also seriously low in Omega-3. This is because our typical diet of convenient processed foods and lots of processed meat is heavy in Omega-6 fatty acids. The studies prove it Many studies have been performed that show when animals are fed a diet high in Omega-6 oils, they become insulin resistant and obese. But when the animals were given Omega-3 their metabolism became normal. Even when they continued to eat lots of Omega-6 fats. Prevent metabolic syndrome – What you can do To avoid being a Syndrome X statistic, it’s essential to ensure that you follow a suitable dietary intake for your health, take exercise, lose weight if required. Ensure where possible you are not elevating your blood sugars and creating insulin resistance. It is important your body has essential Omega-3 fatty acids and consciously avoid foods high in omega 6. You may require several supplements initially. This will ensure you are nutritionally optimal to allow your body to heal itself. Picking the correct supplement to your needs is crucial to get right. It can be a minefield and so if you have any concerns with: blood pressure, cholesterol and lipid levels, weight gain, excess weight around your abdomen, blood sugar control issues… we can help you so do get in touch. 121 Dietitian are the experts assisting you in turning the clock back on inflammatory health concerns. Nutritional programmes are completely created to suit you. They take into account your food likes and dislikes, your activity levels, your abilities to cook, if you have a family to include, if you travel with your job, your health parameters, your blood tests, body composition and much more…. The most worrying fact about metabolic syndrome: Even if you don’t have any of the associated health issues as mentioned at present in your body, it can still be showing normal while you have problems starting 10-15 years in advance. The body can store up problems and this is a certainty if you are eating incorrectly and slowly gaining weight. Don’t get to the stage where your body and bloods are showing ill health.
